En même temps que ce double CD sort le maxi cinq titres Eliminate Exterminate Eradicate qui enfonce le clou dans l’occiput à grand coup d’indus celte, de dark ambient planante et d’electro transcendantale (les dancefloors transylvaniens de « Eradicate » et « Degenerate ») dessinant une fresque teutonique qui tient autant du space opera que du Puy du Fou. Si Westwind arpente les landes crayeuses de Current 93, Coil ou Death In June, c’est pour y coller sa patte mélodico-martiale à la manière d’un Laibach (le fabuleux morceau caché) ou d’un Goblin roumain.

Westwind’s foray on the road to dystopia and human self-destruction continues; past bleak ash-choked dead landscapes warmed only by radioactive fires and the deadlight from a sun that can no longer penetrate an atmosphere heavy with dust and chemical detritus. Welcome to the end of all things. Yet, the presence of a quote from Petti Linkola (Linkola’s musing not a million bodies away from that of Manson during his eco-years) and Jacques Cousteau (both connected by water, as it were), respectively, centres the eye of the storm: the natural world will continue to suffer until human population growth is more aggressively regulated and controlled. Translated into an aural soundscapes sees Westwind cultivate samples from Caesar’s damming speech in the movie, Conquest of the Plant of the Apes to Howard Beale’s manic plea from 1976’s Network. The tracks themselves are vintage Westwind. Heavy ambiences brood and and swarm under a cloud of electronica that become more martial in flavour on the opening track ‘Eliminate’. The despairing atmospheres are maintained through lo-fi distorted sampling, pulsed electronics and flashes of martial arrangements. ‘Eradicate’ being particularly strong by layering keys and recorded track structures alongside a competent rhythm that does not rob the track of its inherent darkness.

The closing track ‘Message’ employs long durations of silence broken by moments of sound that at times recall effects sounds from Forbidden Planet. A track just over 23 minutes in length its final 8 minutes rise from silence to unveil a crushing mix of percussions, vocal and synth barreling towards an inevitable end. The good thing about Westwind is that they know their strengths and their limits and this release sees them playing to both in a shattering fashion.

Hvor de to foregående album i deres abstrakte form hører til blandt de lidt mere krævende lytteoplevelser, opererer næste album i et mere jordnært univers med elementer af rock. Kunstneren kalder sig Westwind, og albummet Eliminate! Exterminate! Eradicate! er en cd-ep bestående af fem numre og udgivet som en appetitvækker til det kommende album Ravage. Stilistisk bevæger vi os et sted imellem psykedelisk rock, industrial og martial, imens passager af spoken word, hentet fra blandt andre den franske havforsker Jacques Cousteau og den radikale finske miljøforkæmper Pentti Linkola, udgør en del af albummets samlede lydbillede. Et comme si cela ne suffisait pas, Westwind nous offre avec Eliminate Exterminate Eradicate un CD-R truffé d’ambiances guère plus joviales, mais finalement plus proches d’un format « néo-indus traditionnel » (mention spéciale au génialissime « Eradicate »). Incontournable lui aussi, ce EP sera la porte d’entrée idéale pour découvrir Westwind, avant de plonger avec une joie désespérée dans les ténèbres de Ravage.

Next album from the label is the most rock-based release of the four albums reviewed here. Stylish Westwind’s album « Eliminate! eterminate! eradicate! » separates from the more abstract spheres of the two latter, especially with the postrock-like track « Eradicate ». An excellent track that in its repetitive nature of rhythm and melodic pace contains a nice hypnotic atmosphere. The album is an appetizer to the full-length double disc album « Ravage » just released on parent label « Steelwork Maschine ». Present 5 track-cd-ep « Eliminate! eterminate! eradicate! » moves in spheres of psychedelia, ritual industrial and martial. Spoken word is an important part of the sound picture here.

Eine MCD mit einer satten Spielzeit von über einer Stunde bekommt man sicherlich nicht alle Tage serviert – da kann sich so manche Truppe eine Scheibe abschneiden, zumal ich es eh eine Frechheit finde, dem Fan eine Scheibe mit einer halben Stunde als Vollzeitwerk zum entsprechenden Preis anzubieten. Aber zurück zu diesem Silberling von Westwind. Auf jenem haben fünf Kompositionen ihre Heimat gefunden, wovon speziell die ersten drei Darbietungen definitiv starke Kost offenbaren. Eröffnet wird das Werk anfangs allerdings erst einmal von einer recht uninteressanten Geräuschkulisse, eben bis die Electronic zum Einsatz kommt. Warme Tastenklänge, leicht martialisch angehauchtes Schlagwerk und eine markante Melodieführung machen « Eliminate » zum ultimativen Eröffnungsstück. Auch das folgende « Exterminate » vermag mit seiner verträumten Melodie punkten, wobei speziell die gesprochenen Passagen stimmungsfördernd wirken. « Eradicate » stellt dann aber doch noch eine weitere Steigerung dar was Songaufbau und Rhythmik betrifft. Fabelhaft! Die einzigen Schwächen, die Westwind in der Punktezahl leider etwas schmälern, liegen in den letzten beiden Stücken. Da wäre zum einen « Degenerate », was zwar nicht schlecht, aber mit seiner längeren Spieldauer doch hätte variabler an den Hörer gebracht werden können. Zum anderen ist dann noch das letzte Stück « Message ». Warum man sich hier fast eine Viertelstunde Zeit lässt, bis dieser in die Gänge kommt, kann ich leider überhaupt nicht nachvollziehen. Der eigentliche Track beläuft sich somit auf gut fünf Minuten und ist auch der schwächste. Auch wenn « Eliminate! Exterminate! Eradicate! » apokalyptische Grundzüge trägt, so ist das gebotene Material dennoch sehr eingängig, ja mitunter sogar als angenehm zu bezeichnen. Und trotzdem verliert das Werk zum Ende hin doch etwas an Reiz, bleibt aber aufgrund des starken Auftaktes im oberen Bereich angesiedelt.

Westwind – Eliminate Exterminate Eradicate (miniCD – Steelwork Maschine) This mini album was originally recorded in 2008. It brings a nice addition to the recently released « Ravage »-dcd. The « Eliminate »-cut is the first track from the list and sounds quite close to the 2nd disc of « Ravage ». Organ sounds and industrial components have been mixed with vocal samplings. It’s a quite long track characterized by a remarkable progression in the writing. « Eradicate » is a quite surprising piece as we here get an accentuation of electronic sounds and robotic vocals. The organ and its ‘ritual’ (or sacred) aspects already appear on « Degenerate ». This is another long during piece from more than 14 minutes, but in my opinion the real highlight. The evolution from the song is again impressive and totally fascinating. We here definitely can speak about a ritual piece of music reaching a climax in the end. This is pretty cool ambient music! The last piece entitled « Message » is a bit boring. We get a kind of white part for minutes while the real track (properly speaking) starts after 14 minutes. I don’t really like this kind of formula, but globally speaking « Eliminate Exterminate Eradicate » is a well-crafted release with real strong extracts! With 2 new releases the Westwind again rules over the French dark ambient fields!
